Born in 1890 in Birresdorf, Germany, Profittlich was a powerful symbol of spiritual resistance during a tumultuous era of persecution. His life, marked by challenges and sacrifices, offers a poignant perspective on the strength of religious conviction and the importance of human dignity in the darkest times of history.<\/p>\n<p>In 1936, Eduard Profittlich was appointed as the first residential bishop for the Catholics of Estonia. Profittlich took Estonian citizenship, studied Estonian language and loved the local culture. He was arrested in June 1941. On February 22, 1942 after months of suffering, Profittlich died for Christ, steadfast in his principles and his God until the end in a Soviet prison camp in Kirov.<\/p>\n<p>His<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-605\" src=\"http:\/\/estoniaembassy.orderofmalta.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/69\/2025\/06\/Order-Of-Malta-in-Estonia-25.02.2025-82-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/estoniaembassy.orderofmalta.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/69\/2025\/06\/Order-Of-Malta-in-Estonia-25.02.2025-82-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/estoniaembassy.orderofmalta.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/69\/2025\/06\/Order-Of-Malta-in-Estonia-25.02.2025-82-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/estoniaembassy.orderofmalta.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/69\/2025\/06\/Order-Of-Malta-in-Estonia-25.02.2025-82-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/estoniaembassy.orderofmalta.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/69\/2025\/06\/Order-Of-Malta-in-Estonia-25.02.2025-82-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/estoniaembassy.orderofmalta.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/69\/2025\/06\/Order-Of-Malta-in-Estonia-25.02.2025-82-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>. The Roman Catholic Church has been waiting for this day for a long time, as this beatification has been dealt with for over 21 years, and it is the first in the history of the Estonian Catholic Church, and one of the first in the Nordic countries after the 16th century. Profittlich will be the patron for the Diocese of Tallinn, Catholic schools and as his episcopal moto was &#8220;Faith and Peace&#8221;, future Blessed will definitely be heavenly guide and protector for all of us.<\/p>\n<p>In his opening speech, H.E. Manfred Mautner von Markhof, the Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta in Estonia emphasized the necessity of the beatification for both the Catholic Church and Estonian society as a whole. He described Archbishop Profittlich as a symbol of the nearly 100,000 Estonians who lost their lives due to Soviet repressions. The Ambassador also emphasized the importance of this presentation to further explain to the ambassadors the background to the beatification and the upcoming events.<\/p>\n<p>H.E. Bishop Philippe Jourdan introduced in more detail the personality and activities of Archbishop Profittlich as a church leader, as well as his decision to remain with the Estonian people, whom he loved and cherished, during the darkest times of history knowing that this would result in his martyrdom.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Marge-Marie Paas, the diocesan postulator, provided a comprehensive overview of Profittlich&#8217;s work and legacy as the supreme shepherd of the Roman Catholic Church in Estonia.<\/p>\n<p>H.E. Archbishop Georg G\u00e4nswein, the Apostolic Nuncio in the Baltic countries, the ambassadors of Austria, Brazil, Chile, Croatia, Finland, France, Georgia, Guatemala, Hungary, Italy, Malta, Moldova, North Macedonia, Peru, Spain, Switzerland together with the Charg\u00e9 d\u2019affaires of Germany, Ireland, Poland and Portugal attended the presention. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was represented by Mr Urmas Eigla, Head of Protocol, and Ms Anne Mardiste, Desk Officer responsible for Western Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The feedback received from the ambassadors was extremely positive.
