Relations with Estonia

On March 11, 2020, in the Magistral Palace, Ambassador Stefano Ronca, Secretary General for Foreign Affairs of the Sovereign Order of Malta, received Celia Kuningas-Saagpakk, Ambassador of Estonia to Italy, for the exchange of note verbales establishing the formal opening of bilateral diplomatic relations.
During the talks, satisfaction was expressed for this important act that strengthens dialogue and bilateral cooperation.

On 20 January 2021 H.E. Paul Teesalu presented his Letters of Credence in Rome becoming the first Ambassador of Estonia to the Order of Malta.
On July 6, 2021,H.E. Manfred Ritter Mautner von Markhof presented the Letter of Credence to the President of the Republic of Estonia, H.E. Kersti Kaljulaid, and became the first Ambassador of the Order of Malta to Estonia.
“I am very happy to be the first Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs to make an official visit to the Sovereign Order of Malta and I am eager to strengthen our bilateral cooperation.” With these words, on 15 July 2021 Eva-Maria Liimets met Grand Chancellor Albrecht Boeselager in the Magistral Villa in Rome. Numerous topics were covered during the meeting, ranging from the international situation – with a focus on Afghanistan and the Middle East – to the European Union’s migration policies, Estonia’s increased commitment in humanitarian cooperation and the digitisation of third countries. The respective ambassadors, Paul Teesalu for Estonia and Manfred L. Mautner von Markhof for the Order of Malta, also attended the meeting.

On June 29, 2023 the Embassy of the Sovereign Order of Malta to the Republic of Estonia was officially inaugurated. Prior to the opening ceremony, the Holy Mass was celebrated at the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Tallinn.

The official opening of the Embassy of the Sovereign Order of Malta to the Republic of Estonia took place on the rooftop terrace of the 30-floor Maakri Business Centre, the location of the embassy. The ceremony marked a significant moment, highlighting the harmonious blend of Tallinn’s medieval charm and modernity.

In his opening speech, H.E. Manfred Ritter Mautner von Markhof, the Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta to Estonia, expressed his deepest gratitude to the Republic of Estonia for its warm welcome of the Order of Malta. The Ambassador affirmed the Order’s intention to support those in need in a manner most appropriate for the local community.
